Lot:275 , Confederate Leech & Rigdon Short Sword with Rare
Description:
Thomas Leech and Charles Rigdon operated the firm of Leech & Rigdon, also known as the Memphis Novelty Works originally in Memphis, TN. They relocated first to Columbus, MS and later Greensboro, GA as the Yankees got closer. Their products are some of the most coveted by Confederate collectors. double-edged blade with deep patina rust and loses. This popular Leech product has the more rare classic “S” shaped guard and utilized Naval grips still slotted at pommel for a basket. This sword has the Leech and Rigdon standard fish scale pattern cast into the hollow brass grip. This is one of the rarest of Confederate short swords/cutlasses. This piece is obviously a battlefield pickup due to the period damage to the lower "S" guard and overall heavy patina.
