Rare 16th-17th C. English or Italian Horseman Sword with a Powerful Large Blade & Early Rapier Hilt. An interesting early example of the transitional type, wearing a sturdy and exceptionally battle-worthy single-edged blade of very substantial length, most definitely used by the cavalry warrior. With its steel hilt mounts of an early and seldom encountered pattern, having iron wire grip with fine braiding and turk-head bands. Heavily cleaned overall still showing areas of original heavy pitting and patina, a rare and impressive large sword, built for most serious combat action of the early Renaissance era. Total length : 44" Blade length 37 1/2" Blade width is almost 1 1/2" at ricasso.
