Antique Japanese & World Weapons AUG. 29th
Lot 333:
Rare 18th-19th C. Mughal Indian TULWAR ~ SHAMSHIR Sword with unique Blade. A very rare and unusual early example, with its steel hilt of traditional form adorned with two brass bosses with turk-head decoration. Mounted with a fascinating blade of unique configuration, at first may appear as Sosun-Pata blade but it actually does have a different configuration being recurved twice and with a lightly raised extended false edge. The blade is elegant but sturdy and very deadly, the structure of the steel does show certain layered patterns and although does not appear to be Wootz, still shows a complex structure of multi-layered steel. In its fabric over wood scabbard with ornate lacing. A very rare specimen indeed, the owner could not find any analogs to the shape of this, possibly unique blade in any Islamic and Indo-Persian arms references. Total length (inside scabbard if present) : 35 1/2" Blade length : 29 1/2"
