Rare and Fine 17th C. German Pappenhimer Rapier Sword. With its elaborate steel furniture having swept-hilt guard with additional large pierced shells, wooden grip with remains of its original wired bondage. mounted with a long double edged blade of the oval cross-section for most of its length, the lower blade with large fullers containing struck maker’s names, lower ricasso with additional struck maker’s mark to each side. A very impressive and handsome weapon, used by both military and wealthy civilians of the era.Pappenheim-hilt rapierFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :The Pappenheim-hilt rapier originated in Germany in 1630 and was popularized by imperial general of the Thirty Years’ War (1618â€â€œ48) Count Pappenheim. It later became popular throughout Europe due to its two pierced shell guards which provided great protection to the soldier wielding the sword. Rapiers were used throughout Europe by 1500 and this remained until the late 17th century. Rapiers were used on battlefields, however they were associated more with fashion and dueling for example.
