Highly Unusual 18th-19th C. Scottish Basket-Hilt Horseman’s Broad Sword – Backsword ~ Possibly of French manufacture. The most unusual French made cavalry sword, probably a special order by one of the wealthier Scottish officers, dating from around the break of 18th/19th centuries, featuring a huge iron basket guard of an intricate and complex pattern. Long wooden grip is covered in fine shark skin and bound by a thick iron wire, topped with a chiseled lion head pommel, top and bottom of the pierced front guard adorned with Celtic style engraved decorations. Mounted with a very long and powerful single-edged blade of early Cuirassier’s "Pallasch" pattern, having two large fullers through its entire length and bearing struck makers marks to the lower blade. Nice rich patina throughout, basket branches have two old repairs, most likely done when the sword was still in service and possibly even after the battle where it would obtain such scars. Solid and intact overall, a truly impressive and unique weapon of Massive proportions. Overall : 46" Blade : 38"
