Antique British proofed Enfield pattern 1856 cavalry carbine percussion musket made in 1860 by B. Woodward & Sons in Birmingham, England. Size : 40". Benjamin Woodward was a gun and pistol maker, who established his business in 1838 at 260 Newtown Row in Birmingham. In 1840, he moved to 10 Whittall Street, and in 1842 became ?B WOODWARD & SONS?, operating under that name until the firm closed in 1883.The Enfield patterns 1853 Rifle Musket and 1856 Cavalry carbine were used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War. The 1853 was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P1853 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war.~ . Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
