Lot 166:
Rare original Japanese abstract woodblock print by Onchi Koshiro ( 1891-1955).Onchi was a pivotal figure in the early development of Japan’s Creative Print movement. He led the First Thursday Society (Ichimokukai), a discussion and support group for artists intent on recreating woodblock printing in a distinctively Japanese, modern style. Experimental and expressionistic in his own way, Onchi moved between abstract and figurative work, revolutionizing the medium into a vehicle for modern art. Onchi was renowned for his experiments with abstract compositions that he carved and printed himself, using unusual materials such as leaves and string. In his collaboration with other creative print (sosaku hanga) artists, his work was less idiosyncratic and aimed to appeal to a wider audience. Size: 9 1/8" x 6 1/2".~ .
