Francisco Zuniga (Mexican, 1912-1998). ?"Madre Juchiteca? – 1972, color lithograph. Signed and dated in plate, framed.Zuniga was a Costa-Rican born Mexican artist known for his painting and his sculpture, earning the title of ?perhaps the best sculptor? of the Mexican political modern style by the Encyclopedia Britannica. Size: 23" x 28" with frame; 18 1/4" x 23 1/4" without frame.Zuniga?s father worked as a sculptor of religious figures and stone work, giving his artistic inclinations an early start, reading books on the history of art, artistic anatomy, and the life of various Renaissance painters by the age of twelve. Working in his father?s shop sensitized him to shape and spaces and enrolled in the Escuela des Bellas Artes in Mexico, but left the following year to continue on his own. He self-studied his studied German Expressionism and the writings of Alexander Heilmayer, through which he learned about French sculpture.~ .
