Spartakiada – Avgust 1928, Moskva [Spartakiad – August 1928, Moscow], an early Soviet Poster by Sergei Vlasov (1898-1942). Sponsored by the Spartakiad Organizational Committee, Moscow, 1928. 99.4 x 71.6 cm. (39 5/8" x 28 3/8"). An official poster of a major sports event envisioned by its organizers as the Socialist answer to the bourgeois Olympics. Spartakiad appears to be Vlasovs best-known work in the poster genre. We do not have much information about the artist. A short online biography states that Vlasov was born in St. Petersburg, serving in the Army through WWI and the Civil War. In 1921, maybe 1922, his commanders, noting the young soldiers artistic skills, sent him to Moscow to study art at VKhUTEMAS. The biography further notes that he joined AKhR in 1928, and that he produced a number of political posters. ~ . Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
