On the death of his brother Alexander I, on December 1, 1825, and after the renunciation of his brother Constantine, he became Tsar of all the Russia and began by suppressing the liberal movement of the Decembrists. He put down the uprising in Poland in 1831. After promoting the liberation of Greece, he posed as a defender of the Slavs and opposed the Turks. He found on his way the English and the French.
