Very rare jar by Hopi potter Elizabeth White (also known as Elizabeth Polingaysi) .
Elizabeth White (1892-1990) was born in 1892 at Old Oraibi, Third Mesa.
She went to boarding school in California, where she became assimilated in western culture. Once she returned to the Hopi reservation and began potting, she combined Hopi and western techniques. She developed the technique of adding applique items to her pottery. This buff ware jar is a wonderful example of one of her applique pieces with its two large corn designs attached to either side of the jar.
The rare piece is stone polished. It’s signed Polingausi The fascinating story of her early life is documented in her book, "No Turning Back." In 1978 she was awarded both the Arizona Indian Living Treasure tribute and the Heard Museum?s Gold Medal.
