AUTUMN ESTATES AND COLLECTIONS, NOV. 16, 2024
Lot 6003:
Southwestern US Hopi Tribe, ca. 1940-1950’s. This is a gorgeous cylindrical clay fired and burnished deep cylinder vase with an elaborate bird motif on the exterior. The designs depict the thunderbird, an important motif in indigenous Southwestern mythology (and, indeed, throughout North America!). Using a classic Hopi stylized, geometric rendering, the thunderbird here is a symbol of calling for rain in their desert homeland; the thunderbird is also sometimes known as the "rainbird". This vase has a relatively unique shape and the artwork is very well done. Size: 6 3/4" H, Diameter: 5 1/2".
Provenance -private collection, Colorado.
