Maharaja is a Sanskrit title that translates to "great king" and was historically used to refer to the male ruler of an Indian state.
The title was originally given to rulers of large regions with minor tributary rulers, but later came to be used by Hindu monarchs of smaller states who claimed descent from ancient maharajas. Many later maharajas had little actual control.
The first maharaja of the Sikh Empire was Ranjit Singh, who ruled from 1801 until his death in 1839.
The last maharaja of the Sikh Empire was Maharaja Sir Duleep Singh, who was also known as the "Black Prince of Perthshire
