Winter Antique Art and Arms, Dec.14th., 2024
Lot 6672:
Painted Russian icon Our Lady of Kazan from the second half of the 19th century.
The first image was found in the city of Kazan on July 8, 1579 after the Madonna appeared three times to a little girl who indicated the place where clandestine Christians had hidden the icon before the Tatars conquered the city.
The icon was brought in the war for the liberation of Moscow from the Poles in 1612 and the victory is attributed to it.
She is also considered the protector of the Romanov dynasty and became one of the relics of Russia, which blessed the city by giving it its invisible protection.
Another episode connected with the icon dates back to the Second World War, during which a procession with the holy image was made around the city of St. Petersburg, besieged by the Nazis.
Iconographical the Kazan icon Mother of God is a variant of the "Odighitria" type and the main feature is the figure of the child in an upright position. The Virgin is painted up to her chest, a feature that began to become popular in the 16th century.
Size: 14 1/4" x 12 1/2".
